Dr. Bob Bell

Opening Keynote - Dr. Bob Bell, Former Deputy Minister, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Ontario

Robert Bell served as Deputy Minister of Health and Long-Term Care from 2014 to 2018. Prior to this role, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of University Health Network for nine years. He was previously the Chief Operating Officer at Princess Margaret Hospital and Chair of both Cancer Care Ontario’s Clinical Council and the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario.

Dr. Bell received his Doctor of Medicine from McGill University, a Master of Science from the University of Toronto and achieved his Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1983. He completed a sub-specialty training in Orthopaedic Cancer Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University in 1985, and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2005.

Dr. Bell is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. As an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon, health system executive, clinician-scientist, and educator, Dr. Bell has more than 40 years of health care experience.

Site Visit - Institute for Applied Heath Sciences (Mohawk College)

We’ll be visiting Mohawk’s healthcare campus, the Institute for Applied Health Sciences in order to watch live healthcare simulations, giving you a chance to understand the patient experience as it unfolds in real time. After observing the simulations, a facilitated discussion will deepen your understanding of the patient experience. Before returning to Mohawk's Fennell Campus, you will also get a chance to tour the healthcare facilities, including the simulated hospital and home care apartments.  Transportation by bus provided. Limited spots available.

Site Visit - St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton/ Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) and the Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton are the regional leaders in the provision of psychiatric care and research, innovating programs to help radically reduce the disability and stigma associated with mental illness and addiction. Specifically, St. Joseph’s is a leader in the areas of early intervention, outreach services, rehabilitation, recovery and integration into the community.

As a healing place for the mind and body, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s  West 5th Campus integrates mental health and medical services along with teaching and research facilities, expanded outpatient services for psychiatry, diagnostic imaging and medical services.

Attendees will be provided with the opportunity to tour the West 5th campus, learn about the history of mental health care in Hamilton and gain insight into the patient experience.

Falling Through the Cracks - Greg’s Story

Tragically, Greg Price’s journey through the healthcare system ended in his unexpected death. After watching a short film on this journey, his family members will moderate a discussion about how Greg’s story can inspire positive change and improvement in the healthcare system. An unforgettable and moving experience.

Solution Room - User-focused design for better healthcare

This year's Apps for Health is designed to be hands-on!  Continue to tap into the empathy for the patient experience and learn the basics of human centered design for product development, in this interactive, fast-paced, three hour session. Limited spots available.
